Walk For Your Health

We’ve all heard about how important regular exercise is for our health.  Especially as we get older, we need to stay or get active.  As they say, “use it or lose it.”  Many doctors recommend a minimum of 30 minutes of activity, 5 days per week.  I’ve found that one of the best ways to get moving is walking.  Walking is easy to do, highly enjoyable, and best of all, it’s free.  I particularly enjoy walking outdoors.  I  go to a park, a beach, or sometimes just cruise around my neighborhood.  No matter where I go, I  feel invigorated and energized.  I enjoy the fresh air and the beauty of nature that surrounds me.

The health benefits of walking are many.  Among them, the Mayo clinic highlights a few.  (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/walking/HQ01612)

  • Lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol)
  • Raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol)
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes
  • Manage your weight
  • Improve your mood
  • Stay strong and fit

If regular exercise hasn’t been part of your routine, start off slowly and gradually increase your time and speed.  You can go by yourself, bring a friend, family, or your favorite pet.  I’m sure you’ll enjoy and appreciate the many benefits that walking provides.

Sleep Apnea Affects Many Unknowing Adults

Radio Host, Audrey Biloon interviewed Dr. Harold A. Black, DDS, Dental Sleep Center of Savannah at Morrison Dental Associates  (www.mdadental.com) and discussed Sleep Apnea.  Dr. Black is a nationally renowned expert on dental sleep medicine. He was a charter member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is regarded as the founding father of dental sleep medicine in Savannah.

Dr Black outlined the following during the interview:

  • More than 20% of all adults suffer from some form of sleep disorder but only 10% of those people are ever diagnosed. SNORING is the most common symptom of a serious medical condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
  • Sleep apnea is a serious condition characterized by interruptions of breathing during sleep and has been linked to much more serious health problems like strokes, heart attacks, life-threatening high blood pressure, depression and diabetes.
  • Certain types of sleep apnea can be treated with a minimally invasive oral appliance. These appliances are also recommended for sleep apnea patients who are unwilling or unable to tolerate the use of C-PAP machines. A cost-effective treatment plan to successfully manage mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea utilizes oral appliance therapy, which has been proven to be the least expensive, least intrusive treatment to reduce the symptoms and effects of sleep apnea.
  • Oral appliances are comfortable and easy to wear. Most people find that it only takes a couple of weeks to become acclimated to wearing the appliance. Oral appliances are small and convenient making them easy to carry when traveling, and treatment with oral appliances is reversible and non-invasive.
